First, let me say that I would love to have an equity practitioner visit my classroom and give feedback on what he/she sees and offer suggestions for improvement. This was mentioned in the article read for April 11th’s meeting. I think this could be incredibly helpful to challenge my ideas and my procedures. Something that I would like to do to improve equity is to be sure I am interacting with all students. At times, it feels like I’m being sucked into conversations with the assertive children who demand my attention. They’re the ones that come to talk to me often through the day. Because of this, I feel that I interact less with the quiet ones, including my newcomer. I want to give everyone my full attention when they speak to me, but, when time runs out, time is out. Something I need from my school or even from you all is a list, perhaps, of some respectful phrases I could use to quickly end conversations with the chatty ones so that I could chat more with the quiet ones. In terms of measuring the progress, I am not sure how to do that.
